Uasin Gishu County Governor Jackson Mandago has welcomed Athletics Kenya's decision to stage the 2020 Olympic Games trials in Eldoret, citing the region's rich athletic history and the success of previous events.

According to the Athletics Kenya calendar released last week, the trials are scheduled to take place from June 19-21 at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium, the same venue that hosted the 2016 Rio Olympics trials.

Despite concerns over the stadium's renovation works, which have stalled, Mandago expressed optimism that the event will be a success, citing discussions with the Ministry of Sports and the Cabinet Secretary's pledge to ensure the stadium is complete.

"We have been in discussion with the Ministry of Sports and the Cabinet Secretary has pledged to ensure the stadium is complete. It may not be fully complete but the major facilities that will be used, including the running track, will be completed," Mandago said.

Additionally, Mandago revealed plans to renovate the 64 Stadium into a state-of-the-art facility, with designs already completed and resources allocated for the project.

The county chief also highlighted the economic benefits of the event, stating that it will create business opportunities for residents and boost the local economy.

Furthermore, Mandago announced plans to name some of the streets in Eldoret town after legendary athletes from the region, including Eliud Kipchoge.
