On November 26, 2019, a lecturer at the National Institute of Transport (NIT) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, was convicted of soliciting sexual favors from students in exchange for good grades.

Samson Mahimbo, a 69-year-old lecturer, was accused of demanding sex from a student in a hotel room in the Mwenge area of Dar es Salaam on August 14, 2019.

According to the Chief Resident Magistrate, Huruma Shaidi, cases of lecturers asking for sexual favors from their students in exchange for good grades have been rampant in the country.

Magistrate Shaidi stated that the crime committed by Mahimbo was shameful, especially given his position as a mentor and educator.

During the trial, Mahimbo's defense attorney, Claudia Msando, argued that her client was at his retirement age and was the sole breadwinner in his family.

However, the prosecution argued that Mahimbo's actions were a misuse of his authority and that he had committed a serious offense.

As a result, Mahimbo was ordered to pay a cash bail of Sh5 million or risk a jail term of up to three years.
