Kenya Police Boxing Team Vows to Retain National Title ¶
Kenya Police Service boxing team, fondly known as Chafua Chafua, has vowed to retain their National Boxing League title next year. The team's head coach, David Munuhe, expressed confidence in their performance this year, citing their success in all 10 categories, with only one loss.
Chafua Chafua's impressive performance saw them claim 29 points from Kisumu, bringing their total to 122 points and securing the national title. Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) came in second with 42 points, while Kibra finished third with 38 points.
However, the boxing league faced challenges in the past two seasons due to politics. In 2017, Police were stripped of their title, and KDF was declared the winner after allegations of officiating malpractices. The league also experienced disruptions in 2018.
With the election of Anthony 'Jamal' Otieno as the Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) president in June, normalcy has been restored to the league. KDF has announced their intention to return to the league next year in full force, while Police is preparing for the Africa qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Police's only loss in Kisumu came when Shaffi Bakari, an African Games silver medallist, was injured and lost to Duncan Kamau in the flyweight category. Despite this, Police's boxers won their respective final bouts, including George Cosby (middleweight), Boniface Mogunde (welterweight), and Elly Ajowi (Heavyweight).
