Heavy rains have left a trail of destruction in Trans Nzoia County, displacing at least 5,000 people and causing significant property damage.

Published on November 26, 2019, the situation in Kwanza Sub County is particularly dire, with over 1,000 households affected by floods in different areas.

Deputy County Commissioner Emanuel Ngala Mwachiro stated that the government, in conjunction with the Kenya Red Cross, is assessing the situation and taking necessary measures to assist those affected.

Devolution and ASAL Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has already provided 800 iron sheets to 40 families of flood victims in Namanjalala.

The most affected areas include Namanjala, Kapomboi, Kobos, and Kapkoi, where residents have moved to safer grounds to avoid casualties.

Namanjalala location Chief Joab Sambruma reported that at least 4,000 people have been affected in his location, with 40 houses destroyed.

“The Kenya Red Cross is already assessing the area and giving psychosocial counselling to the affected victims,” he said.

According to reports, the flooding in areas such as Kobos was caused by water from the Kobos Dam bursting its banks, flooding lower areas of Sabwami A and B villages.

One farmer, Mary Chepkosgei, shared that her maize crop, ready for harvest, had been swept away by the floods.

Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa also disclosed that the government has allocated Sh20 million to construct dykes in the region to find a lasting solution to the flooding issue.
