On November 25, 2019, the Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland signed a memorandum of understanding with the NO MORE Foundation to combat domestic violence.
The partnership aims to address domestic violence and sexual assault, which are listed as key issues in the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to the World Health Organization, one in three women have suffered from physical or sexual violence, making it a leading cause of death in women and girls.
Speaking on the partnership, Secretary-General Patricia Scotland emphasized the need to stop violence against women in both words and actions, saying, 'We must do everything we can to ensure every child in our home and our community grows up in a safe environment.'
The partnership will enable Commonwealth countries to collect data and start programs to prevent domestic violence, particularly in the 53 Commonwealth member countries.
Executive Director of the NO MORE Foundation, Zaballa, welcomed the partnership, stating that it will go a long way in ending abuse and ensuring perpetrators face justice.
