On November 26, 2019, Kenya Power & Lighting Plc submitted a proposal to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to increase the cost of electricity for consumers who use less than 100 kilowatts by Sh2.50 per kilowatt.
This move aims to see households that use 50 units of electricity pay Sh145 more for the power, with the current cost being Sh816 and the proposed cost being Sh961.
According to a letter to EPRA, Kenya Power argued that the increase is necessary to ensure the company remains in operation, stating that the company may face operational challenges if the review is not granted and may become financially unviable due to the need for substantial investment in service improvement.
EPRA Director-General Pavel Oimeke confirmed that the regulator had received Kenya Power's request, but no approvals have been issued to allow for consultations.
Kenya Power's new CEO, Bernard Ngugi, has been implementing cost-cutting measures to increase the institution's profitability, including withdrawing the provision of afternoon tea at the company's offices.
