On November 19, 2019, a disturbing video emerged of Ibrahim Kiruti Tarayia, a supervisor at Eastmatt Supermarket, viciously attacking a colleague, Sharon Atieno, a cashier.

The incident sparked widespread outrage on social media, leading to the Office of Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) issuing an order for Tarayia's arrest.

He was initially arrested on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, but was released on Wednesday after the victim allegedly withdrew the case. However, Tarayia was re-arrested on Saturday at the Namanga border.

On Monday, Tarayia appeared before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi, who denied him bail. The prosecution argued that Tarayia was a flight risk and a danger to the victim and witnesses.

According to the prosecution, if released, Tarayia would interfere with witnesses and pose a threat to the victim, who has since been forced to quit her job and relocate to Nairobi due to fear for her life.

Eastmatt Supermarket Limited has since confirmed that Tarayia has been laid off and distanced itself from the assault, stating that the culprit acted solely.

The County Gender Director, Rachael Ngugi, slammed the act as despicable and an unacceptable ordeal, calling on people to report gender-based violence before severe damage occurs.
