On November 25, 2019, the National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) embarked on an ambitious sports development plan for the youth, launching the first elite youth camp at Lukenya Academy, along Mombasa Road.

The 10-day training programme, which began on the same day, seeks to impact youth with skills that will enhance their brand identity in their respective sports disciplines ahead of the 2022 Youth Olympics Games set for Dakar, Senegal.

More than 100 youth from 13 sporting disciplines, including athletics, badminton, basketball, cycling, handball, hockey, judo, wrestling, rugby, taekwondo, tennis, beach volleyball, and triathlon, will be drawn into the programme.

According to Francis Mutuku, NOC-K acting Secretary General, the multi-sport camp will include not only technical coaching but also strength conditioning, nutrition, mentorship, and social activities, with the aim of training athletes all round.

‘To ensure objective and accountable selections, the national federations were fully involved in the talent identification. At the end of the programme, NOC-K will announce the names of the youth who will benefit from scholarships in January,' Mutuku added.
