On Monday, November 25, 2019, Ahmed Keruti Taraiya, a 30-year-old Eastmatt employee, appeared before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi in a Kajiado court, facing charges of assaulting a female cashier at an Eastmatt Supermarket outlet.

According to reports, Taraiya was detained for 11 days pending hearing of the matter after the prosecution successfully opposed his release on bail.

During the court proceedings, Taraiya pleaded with the court to release him on favourable bail terms, stating that he is the sole breadwinner of his family and has a child and mother who depend on him.

However, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) opposed the bail application, citing that Taraiya has been threatening the victim, Sarah Atieno, and may interfere with witnesses and is also a flight risk.

The victim, who is currently under witness protection, is set to testify on December 6, 2019.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji had ordered the arrest of Taraiya after a video of the assault went viral, sparking public outcry.
