Unprotected and Unaware ¶
Published on November 25, 2019, a young Kenyan's story of unprotected sex serves as a reminder of the importance of HIV self-testing.
After meeting a girl from Komarock on Instagram, the young man agreed to meet her at his home in Kahawa Sukari. Despite both being aware that sex on the first date wasn't ideal, they decided to proceed without protection.
As they engaged in intimate activities, the young man's anxiety grew, and he eventually freaked out when the girl revealed she had unprotected sex with a random guy three weeks prior.
Fortunately, the young man took matters into his own hands and got tested immediately, but not before freaking out and doing multiple tests over the next three months.
His experience could have been avoided if they had gotten tested first or used self-testing kits, which are now available in Kenya.
Enter #ChukuaSelfie, a movement that promotes HIV self-testing, and the Selfie kit, a convenient and accurate testing option that allows individuals to know their HIV status at home.
The Selfie kit has two testing options: blood testing and oral testing, which involves swabbing the gums and inner cheeks. Results are available within a couple of minutes, and if positive, individuals should seek confirmation at a hospital or clinic.
With anti-retroviral medication, patients can live a normal life, and new research shows that the virus can be completely suppressed, preventing the development of AIDS.
So, how do you get the Selfie kit? It's available in chemists and pharmacies across the country, and you can also order it online via the MyDawa app and Kasha online shops at a 15% discount.
Know your status and have a fantastic sex life. #ChukuaSelfie
