On November 19, 2019, the University of Nairobi Council made a crucial decision that would impact the institution's operations. In a letter released on Monday, Council Chair Prof. Julia Ojiambo announced the suspension of self-sponsored programmes with immediate effect.

The move is part of the university's austerity measures aimed at controlling expenditure. Prof. Ojiambo stated that the decision follows a meeting held on November 19, 2019, where the establishment and functions of the Centre for Self-Sponsored Programmes (CESSP) were deliberated.

According to the letter, the Council resolved to revoke Statute XXXV under which CESSP is established. Prof. Ojiambo emphasized that the decision does not hamper the operations of the university.

Staff under the Centre for Self-Sponsored Programmes will be humanely redeployed into the mainstream services of the University and assigned duties and responsibilities in line with their training, as per the letter.

Banking facilities designated to the programme will continue to be operated by duly recognized signatories, and all activities previously under the programme will be re-designated to other organs of the institution.

Prof. Ojiambo reassured the university fraternity that university functions and all services will continue to be discharged seamlessly.
