South Africa, already one of the world's most dangerous places for females, is grappling with a rising tide of gender-based violence.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has launched a 16-day anti-violence campaign in the northern province of Limpopo, emphasizing the need to tackle the root causes of femicide.
"At the root of gender-based violence are sexist and patriarchal attitudes," Ramaphosa said, calling on men to change their behavior.
He vowed to crack down on perpetrators, setting aside 1.6 billion rand ($108 million/98 million euros) for a six-month emergency plan to improve access to justice for survivors, prevent abuse, and create economic opportunities for vulnerable women.
Government is opening more specialized Sexual Offences Courts and equipping police stations with rape evidence collection kits to expedite trials and support survivors.
"We have truly had enough," Ramaphosa said, echoing the sentiments of a nation outraged by a string of shocking murders.
