On November 25, 2019, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (Nock) announced a significant development in the country's winter sports program. The organization has secured scholarships for three young athletes to train for future winter sports in the Republic of Korea.
The selected athletes are Chebet Njeri, 12 (Roller Skating), Chumbana Likiza, 15 (Roller Skating), and Hassnein Ali, 13 (Ice Skating). They will participate in a two-week training camp from January 6 to 18, 2020, in the Republic of Korea.
According to Francis Mutuku, Nock's acting secretary general, the athletes will be accompanied by roller skating coach Asa Nyariki Obonyo. The training camp will feature various winter sports, including Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Cross-Country Skiing, Bobsled, Short Track, Speed Skating, and Figure Skating.
The 'Dream Program,' a legacy program of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, aims to nurture young winter sports talents who can represent Kenya in future Winter Sports. Mutuku explained that the program focuses on countries with little representation in Winter Sports, and Kenya had only one athlete, Sabrina Simader, in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.
