Kenya is bracing for more heavy rains, with the Kenya Meteorological Department warning of up to 30mm of rainfall in various parts of the country.
The affected regions include Western, South Eastern, Northwestern, Northeastern, and Central regions, including Nairobi.
According to the Met department, the heavy rains are expected to continue on Sunday, 24 November 2019, and Monday, 25 November, with rainfall intensities expected to reduce from Wednesday, 26 November 2019.
Members of the public have been warned to be on the lookout for potential floods, avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields, and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the deployment of the Kenya Defence Forces, the National Police Service, and Special Programmes in the rescue operation in West Pokot.
He has also directed regional commissioners to move people in flood and landslide-prone regions to safer grounds.
Deputy President William Ruto has condoled with the bereaved families and urged those in vulnerable areas to be on high alert.
"To those whose loved ones are yet to be found, I assure you that the ongoing multi-agency rescue operation will continue until after every missing person is accounted for," said President Kenyatta in a statement.
"My thoughts and prayers, and those of our entire nation are with families, friends, and relatives of those who lost their beloved ones in the unfortunate incident. Please accept my heartfelt condolences," he added.
