Published on November 25, 2019, a class action lawsuit has been filed by 16 lecturers from Moi University's Coast Campus in the Mombasa Employment and Labour Court.

The lecturers, led by Joseph Kazungu, are seeking an order of mandamus to compel the university management to pay them Ksh 36.6 million in arrears for services rendered to students.

According to the employment contract, the lecturers claim they are entitled to their agreed wages for tutorial services rendered to students at the Coast Campus.

Four lecturers - Simon Mwachoo Mwanjala, Martin Makokha Fredrick Ndegwa, Nathaniel Karisa, and others - are demanding over Sh 4 million for teaching over 53 units.

The lecturers have also requested the court to compel the university management to issue them with permanent employment letters in consideration of the period they have worked on contractual basis.

Despite airing their complaints internally, the lecturers claim their grievances have fallen on deaf ears, prompting them to seek justice in a court of law.
