Kenya: Death Toll in West Pokot Landslides Rises to 52

On November 24, 2019, a devastating landslide hit remote villages in West Pokot County, claiming the lives of 52 people, with the number of deaths expected to rise as 22 people remained missing.

Rescue and recovery missions were underway, led by various government agencies, with Governor John Lonyangapuo overseeing the efforts.

At the Kapenguria County Referral Hospital, 16 people were admitted on Saturday, with two being discharged the same day and two others referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

More than 400 people were displaced and were taking shelter at various primary schools located on higher ground, according to County Commissioner Apollo Okello.

The worst-hit villages were Nyarkulian, Parua, and Muino, with Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i expected to visit those admitted at the Kapenguria referral hospital on Monday.
