On November 25, 2019, a dramatic turn of events unfolded in Makueni County, as a man suspected of being behind a devastating arson attack was apprehended by members of the public.
Joseph Kioko, a 57-year-old man, was arrested while on the run at Katheka-Kai in Machakos County. He is the brother of Regina Mueni, who tragically lost her life, along with her daughter and two grandchildren, in the fire.
According to eyewitnesses, Kioko appeared suspicious and had visible burns on his face, prompting the public to take action. He was subsequently frog-marched to the police station, where he is currently being held for questioning.
Detectives suspect that Kioko's injuries may have been inflicted during the lighting of the house, where the five family members were sleeping. The family had been embroiled in a land dispute, with elders set to determine the division of the disputed parcel the following day.
The only survivor of the incident is receiving treatment at the Makueni Referral Hospital.
