Leaders' Silence on Mental Health Hinders Progress

November 24, 2019, 22:00

By Eddy Kimani, Mental Health Advocate at MindBright Resources

Leaders' reluctance to discuss their own struggles with mental health is a major obstacle to addressing the issue, according to mental health advocates.

Various studies indicate that depression and anxiety are leading to burn-out in the workplace, and companies are now embracing wellness programs to remedy this.

However, leaders' silence on mental health is hindering progress, as employees look up to them for guidance and support.

Picture a leader standing up and speaking openly about their own experiences with mental health. This would have a humongous impact on those they lead, spurring them to be comfortable talking about themselves.

But what stops us from sharing our stories and being vulnerable to one another? Stigma is the biggest impediment, and it's time to tackle it head-on by discussing mental health openly and honestly.

Leadership is key in dealing with stigma at the workplace, and when leaders champion wellness and mindfulness, it goes a long way in developing a culture of being open and vulnerable in addressing mental health-related issues.
