Published on November 24, 2019, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has unveiled a new initiative to safeguard unaccompanied migrant children arriving in Greece.
The programme, dubbed "No Child Alone," will be overseen by the prime minister's office, with Mitsotakis vowing to provide a safe and nurturing environment for these vulnerable children.
"There is a wound of the migrant crisis that we can heal immediately by ourselves," Mitsotakis stated, emphasizing the need for collective action to protect these children.
Under the new scheme, the government aims to quickly settle 4,000 children living in dire conditions on the Aegean islands, ensuring they receive proper care and support.
Daily Arrivals ¶
Despite the government's efforts, the situation on the islands remains dire, with hundreds of migrants and refugees arriving daily, capitalizing on mild weather conditions.
According to official figures, there are over 37,000 asylum-seekers on the islands, with the International Organisation for Migration reporting an additional 22,000 people in camps on the mainland, which are nearing capacity.
