On November 23, 2019, tragedy struck in Kakamega when a Form Four candidate was killed by an angry mob led by Nyumba Kumi officials.
The student, Rodgers Bett, was accused of stealing a mobile phone from a businessman at Sigalagala market.
According to his mother, Beatrice Khalenya, Rodgers' killing was a result of mistaken identity.
Beatrice Khalenya said, 'They killed my son claiming he is a thief and that's not true. He had just finished sitting his KCSE exams and we knew he was going to uplift the family in future, but that dream has been cut short.'
Confirming the incident, Shinyalu sub-county police commander, Robert Makauon, said a businessman identified as Makau had alleged the student had stolen.
The phone was then allegedly tracked and found in the custody of Rodgers' girlfriend.
Rodgers succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital.
