As the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) gains momentum in Kenya, Deputy President William Ruto has been vocal in his opposition to the proposed constitutional changes. However, a closer examination of his stance suggests that it may be a tactical maneuver rather than a genuine conviction.
With the BBI spearheaded by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, Ruto's opposition may be seen as a way to maintain his relevance in Kenyan politics. As the 2022 general elections approach, Ruto's political future remains uncertain without the full backing of President Kenyatta and the state machinery.
History has shown that in Kenya, the state machinery plays a significant role in determining who becomes the president and commander-in-chief. Despite having a huge following, Raila Odinga has never been declared president, and Kenyans still remember the events of 2007.
Given this context, Ruto's opposition to the BBI may be a temporary stance, as he seeks to maintain his relevance in Kenyan politics. It remains to be seen whether he will eventually join Uhuru and Raila in supporting the BBI.
