On the night of Sunday, November 24, 2019, a man jumped off MV Harambee ferry and plunged into the ocean while it was crossing the Likoni Channel from the mainland to the island side.
According to the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS), the vessel was on its usual route when the incident occurred.

Rescue efforts were deployed to bring the man back on board, but they were hampered by raging undercurrents and darkness.
"Immediate rescue efforts were deployed in vain partly due to the tidal effects and darkness," KFS said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the recovery team is working with the maritime police and beach management units to locate and recover the body.
The incident comes just two months after a mother and her four-year-old daughter drowned after their vehicle slid from the same ferry and plunged into the ocean.
