Eliud Kipchoge, the renowned Kenyan marathon runner, has made history by being crowned the male athlete of the year by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in Monaco on November 23, 2019.
According to the IAAF, Kipchoge was awarded the title alongside other notable athletes, including Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda, Noah Lyles of the United States, Karsten Warholm of Norway, and Sam Kendricks of the United States.
Speaking on the occasion, Kipchoge expressed his gratitude and motivation to other athletes, saying, "It was a special moment for me as it was the first time a human had run 42 kilometers under two hours. I am happy to give motivation to others."
Notably, this is not the first time Kipchoge has received this honor, as he was also crowned the male athlete of the year in 2018.
His achievement comes just a few months after he set a new record by running 42 kilometers in 1:59:40:02, a feat that has left many in awe.
Meanwhile, Dalilah Muhammad of the United States was crowned the female athlete of the year, beating out other notable athletes, including Brigid Kosgei of Kenya, Shelly-Ann Fraser of Jamaica, and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands.
