On the penultimate day of the playoffs at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, GSU, the reigning men's league champions, solidified their position at the top of the table with a 3-0 win over Kenya Prisons on Saturday.
The GSU team, coached by Gedion Tarus, dominated the match, winning sets 25-21, 25-20, and 25-20. This victory marked their second consecutive win and brought them closer to retaining their title for the 14th time.
GSU currently leads the four-team log on six points, jointly with Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), but boasts a superior sets ratio. They will face off against KPA in the final fixture to determine the overall winner, as both teams remain unbeaten after two matches.
GSU had earlier dispatched KDF 3-1 sets in the opening match of the playoffs, while KPA saw off Prisons and KDF with similar margins respectively.
As the top two teams, GSU and KPA have already secured the 2020 African Club Championship slots.
Meanwhile, in the women's contest, Kenya Prisons are on course to defending their title after winning their second match in straight sets against Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Saturday.
The Josp Barasa-coached wardresses defeated DCI by sets of 25-12, 25-22, and 25-16.
Prisons will face off against leaders KCB, who have also not dropped a set, to determine the winners of 2019.
KCB, under the tutelage of former Kenya Pipeline coach Japheth Munala, have defeated DCI and the Oilers respectively and will be hoping to get one over their nemesis Kenya Prisons tomorrow to be crowned champions for the first time since 2006.
The top two teams in the men's and ladies categories will represent the country in next year's African Club Championship, slated for Al Ahly Stadium in Cairo, Egypt.
