On November 23, 2019, a devastating landslide occurred in West Pokot County, claiming the lives of 29 Kenyans and causing significant destruction to infrastructure.
President Uhuru Kenyatta expressed his sadness over the incident, offering his condolences to the families of the victims and praying for the quick recovery of those injured.
He assured the families of the missing that the multi-agency rescue operation would continue until every person was accounted for.
President Kenyatta directed the deployment of resources, including rescue personnel from the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, and Special Programmes, to the affected region to provide mitigative action against further loss of lives.
He also directed Regional Commissioners in flood and landslide-prone regions to work closely with security and humanitarian teams to ensure citizens were moved to safer grounds.
