On Saturday, a landslide in Pokot claimed the lives of 29 people, with 12 from Tapach and Parua in Pokot South and 17 from Tamkal in Pokot Central.

Heavy downpour in the region for hours since Saturday dawn triggered the massive landslides, leaving a trail of destruction.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i confirmed the deaths, stating that rescue operations were underway, led by the Rift Valley Regional Security Committee in collaboration with other government and humanitarian agencies.

According to Matiang'i, the harsh weather conditions were proving a challenge in their rescue efforts, with rescue and recovery efforts remaining the priority.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has condoled with the victims of the landslides, activating disaster response teams including the Kenya Defence Forces.

West Pokot County Commissioner Apollo Okello had earlier called off the rescue operation due to the destruction of most bridges, hindering the operation.
