On November 19, 2019, a disturbing video emerged showing Eastmatt supermarket supervisor Kirruti Taraya assaulting a female cashier, Sharon Atieno, in Kajiado.

The video, which has sparked widespread outrage, shows Taraya slapping Atieno across the face several times before grabbing her by the hair and slapping her some more.

According to reports, Taraya was initially arrested on Tuesday, but he was released on Wednesday after Atieno allegedly withdrew the case. However, the CCTV footage went viral on social media, leading to his re-arrest on Saturday.

Taraya is currently being held at Kajiado Police Station and will be arraigned at Kajiado Law Courts on Monday.

Eastmatt has since responded to the incident, condemning the assault and stating that Taraya has been suspended. The company also assured the public that the cashier is receiving medical attention.

Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK) has also reacted to the video, expressing concern over the manner in which Taraya assaulted Atieno.

David Aunga, a Twitter user, tweeted, "This is how a cashier in Kajiado has been humiliated by his supervisor in Kajiado Eastmatt supermarket. We demand this man be arrested."
