At least 37 people have lost their lives in landslides that occurred in Nyarkulian and Parua villages in West Pokot County following a night of heavy downpour on November 23, 2019.
According to West Pokot County Commissioner Apollo Okello, 15 bodies have been retrieved from the mud, while the search for the remaining 22 continues.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i stated that military and police choppers have been deployed to scale up responses to the tragedy, with rescue and recovery efforts remaining the priority.
However, harsh weather conditions are hampering operations, and traffic flow in the county has been affected, with major roads cut off.
Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a traffic warning, urging motorists to exercise extra caution and advising that its officers have been dispatched to restore the affected sections.
Deputy President William Ruto has condoled with the bereaved families, urging those in vulnerable areas to be on high alert.
