Heavy rains in western Kenya have claimed the lives of at least 24 people in a devastating landslide in West Pokot on Saturday, November 23, 2019.

According to West Pokot County Commissioner Apollo Okello, 12 bodies, including seven children, have been recovered so far, with search efforts continuing.

The landslides were triggered by hours of heavy rains, which also cut off a section of the Kitale-Lodwar road near Ortum, making it impossible to reach the affected villages via road.

The Muruny Bridge was swept away by the waters, further complicating rescue efforts.

Earlier, Joel Bulal, a local administrator, reported that at least 12 people were buried alive in Nyarkulian village and four others in Parua village.

Red Cross personnel have responded to the emergency, providing aid to those affected.
