November 23, 2019, marked the beginning of a heated debate in Kenya, as Njeri Muthaka unveiled her ambitious campaign to encourage women to urinate while standing like men.
Dubbed the 'Susu cup,' this innovative tool aims to address various challenges faced by women when using public restrooms. According to Muthaka, the cup will retail at Sh200 in Nairobi and will provide several benefits, including preventing urinary tract infections and allowing women to share urinals with men.
The Susu cup is designed to be easy to use and maintain. After use, the cup can be shaken and placed in a handbag to be rinsed with soap at home later. This convenience is expected to save women from the discomfort of undressing and the risk of being bitten by snakes and ants while hiding in bushes to pee.
Muthaka's vision is to see all women embracing the idea of urinating while standing like men within the next five years. While the campaign has received both applause and criticism, it has undoubtedly sparked a necessary conversation about the challenges faced by women in Kenya.
