On November 23, 2019, Cabinet Secretary for Sports Amb. Amina Mohamed confirmed Kenya's preparedness to host the World Athletics Under 20 Championship in 2020. The event is set to take place from July 7-12.
The CS made the announcement during a visit to Monaco, where she also launched the competition's website and updated the athletics fraternity on Kenya's preparedness to host the event.
According to Amb. Amina, the experience of hosting the highly successful Under 18 championships in Nairobi in 2017 makes Kenya better placed to handle the U20 Championships. 'We are fully on track. In March, we will do our rehearsals and show the world that we are ready,' she said.
The CS was accompanied by Sports Principal Secretary Kirimi Kaberia, the Chairman of the LOC Lt.Gen (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei, and the LOC CEO Michael Rabar. Amb. Amina assured the world on security arrangements, stating that countries that pulled out citing security concerns in 2017 later regretted their decision.
PS Kaberia said the trip to Monaco was meant to appraise the World Athletics on the progress so far, which he said was going according to plan. The LOC chairman Lt. Gen (Rtd) Tuwei expressed confidence in delivering a world-class event, stating that everything was going according to plan.
