On November 23, 2019, a devastating landslide struck West Pokot County, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming the lives of over 24 people.

Deputy President William Ruto condoled with the affected families and deployed a multi-agency emergency team to assist in the search and rescue mission.

The landslide occurred at Muruny Bridge along the Kitale-Lodwar road, affecting Nyarkulian, Muino, and Parua villages.

West Pokot County Commissioner Apollo Okello stated that more people could be trapped in the avalanche, but rescue efforts were ongoing despite the rain making roads impassable.

Governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo visited the area and called on the army and the Kenya Red Cross society to assist the affected families.

Pokot South MP David Pkosing urged for heightened rescue operations, fearing a rise in the death toll as more than 4 villages were affected.
