Published on November 23, 2019, the Senate Standing Committee on Roads and Transportation has issued a four-month ultimatum to the contractor undertaking infrastructural developments at the Malaba one stop border post in Busia County.

Committee Chairman Kimani Wamatangi expressed disappointment at the slow pace of construction and demanded that the contractor accounts for the time and money already spent on the project.

The delay has affected the passage of goods and cargo at the border, costing the local economy millions of shillings.

During a tour of the site, Wamatangi and other committee members, including Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, faulted the contractor for shoddy works and delaying the project despite receiving a down payment of more than 500 million shillings.

The upgrade of the facility to a one stop Border Post was seen as the only solution, but the delay to complete the job by the contractor has now raised fresh concerns.

More than 6 countries are served by the facility, and senators say they will not condone individuals or companies misusing public resources at the expense of taxpayers.
