Kenyan women are increasingly turning to sponsorship deals, with some receiving up to Sh100,000 monthly. However, the true cost of these deals remains unclear.
According to Jane, a 29-year-old administrator, she has had four sponsors over the past five years, with each providing her with Sh25,000 monthly. She claims to have never slept with any of them, and that they have never requested her to do so.
However, Waithera, a friend of Jane's, expressed concern about the source of the money. She shared a story about a friend who was arrested and sentenced to prison for aiding and abetting a man who used her account to clean his money.
Waithera's friend had been receiving $5,000 (approximately Sh500,000) every month, which she was told to use to buy land, a car, and other assets. However, when the money stopped coming, she was arrested and charged with aiding and abetting.
As Waithera noted, 'It's good to use the little you have, at least you know where it is coming from.'
