Heavy rains have caused widespread destruction in Pokot South, with the death toll from a landslide rising to 24 on November 23, 2019.

West Pokot County Commissioner Apollo Okello said rescue efforts have been hindered by heavy rainfalls, which have swept away most bridges in the area.

Okello stated that a family of seven is missing in Pokot South, and another 24 people are missing after a village was swept in Pokot Central.

"Seven people of the same family were buried alive in Nyarkulian area, Pokot South, and 24 were buried alive in Muino area, Pokot Central sub county," Okello said.

The main road connecting the region between Lodwar and Kapenguria highway has been cut off, making it difficult for rescue teams to reach the affected areas.

According to local administrators, more people and animals could be trapped inside their homes after being buried by the landslide.
