On November 23, 2019, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) issued a stern warning to TV and radio stations in the country.
The warning, published in the government-owned Daily News newspaper, stated that stations that fail to adhere to the regulation will face fines or have their licenses withdrawn.
The regulation is based on the 2016 Media Services Act, which requires journalists to have a minimum of a communication-related diploma to be accredited.
Media graduates in Tanzania have long complained that they are overlooked for jobs in favor of DJs and comedians, who are not trained in journalism.
According to the graduates, those without proper training are more likely to ignore the profession's ethical standards.
A journalist praised the TCRA's move on social media, saying, "Let us respect the profession, let people go to school if they want to become journalists."
