On November 23, 2019, the 2019-20 KRU Championship season was in full swing, with several teams vying for top spots. Strathmore Leos, led by captain Gabriel Adero, were at the top of the standings with 19 points, two more than second-placed MMUST RFC.

Leos were looking to beat SC Pirates and bounce back to Kenya Cup, while MMUST was aiming for their fifth consecutive win in their second season in the championship.

MMUST captain Samuel Mbeche expressed confidence in his team's ability to win, saying, 'The team is focused and ready to win their matches. After our win in Kisii, we are confident of a win.'

Meanwhile, United States International University (USIU RFC) was seeking to register their second win when they hosted eighth-placed Egerton Wasps.

Other matches in the league included Kisii traveling to North Rift to face newbies Eldoret, with the hope of securing their second win of the season and moving out of the relegation zone.
