On November 20, 2019, Sony Sugar FC failed to honour a match against Zoo FC, marking the third time the club had defaulted on a match this season.
The decision to expel Sony Sugar FC from the Kenya Premier League was made by the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Management Limited on November 22, 2019.
The club's financial difficulties, which began after their main sponsor, Sony Sugar Factory, cancelled their sponsorship, have been a major contributing factor to their struggles.
“Following review of the referee and match Commissioner’s report of the KPL 2019/2020 match number 090 between Zoo Fc and Sony Sugar which was scheduled to be played on Wednesday, November 20 2019, it was noted the away club, Sony Sugar, failed to honour the,” read the statement from KPL.
As a result of their expulsion, Sony Sugar FC will no longer be participating in the Kenya Premier League competition for the remainder of the season.
