On September 20, 2018, George Kimani, Monica's brother, arrived at her Lamuria Gardens Apartment in Kilimani, Off Dennis Pritt Road, with his girlfriend. They had been trying to reach Monica, but the door was locked, and they could hear the sound of running water from the kitchen.

After knocking several times and receiving no response, they sought the help of a caretaker. The caretaker accessed the house through the balcony window, which was open, and found Monica dead in the bathtub.

George testified that when he entered the apartment, he found Monica lying sideways in the bathtub, her dress halfway pulled, and her pantie torn. Her hands were tied with white straps, and another white strap was used to tie her leg.

George explained that he had schooled with Joseph Irungu, aka Jowie, in 2012 at the Technical University of Kenya. He texted Jowie and told him what had transpired, and Jowie called him on WhatsApp, asking what had happened.

According to George, Jowie told him, 'If you involve the media, this case won't go far. I run a security company and I can help you trace who did this.'

However, George and his family were interested in having the gruesome murder of his sister aired and wanted media coverage. They contacted Jowie because they thought he would assist with media coverage, given his connection to Citizen TV through his ex-fiancée, Jacque Maribe.
