On November 20, 2019, a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate died in a tragic incident at a local dispensary in Seme, Kisumu County.

The 18-year-old girl, whose identity was withheld by authorities, had just completed her KCSE exams at Rata Secondary School and was a day scholar.

According to County Director of Education Isaak Atebe, preliminary reports from the school's Principal Benson Okoth indicated that the girl died at the dispensary on Wednesday night after developing labour pains.

"The report we have is a verbal one from the school management, and a comprehensive report will come later," said Atebe.

He added that a team from his office had been dispatched to visit the school to furnish him with a complete report, which would verify the preliminary report.

Area Sub County Police Commander Hellen Rotich stated that they had yet to receive the report, and could only comment once it reached their desk.
