Published on November 22, 2019, the Senate has suspended its inquiry into the cancellation of the Sh22 billion Kimwarer dam project.

Following a petition by Elgeyo Marakwet residents, the Senate Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee has begun receiving submissions.

Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen tabled the petition in the House, which asked lawmakers to ensure the report of the technical committee is not implemented until the Senate determines it was legally established.

Committee chairperson Samson Cherargei expects the government to suspend implementation of the report, which involves former Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich and Principal Secretary Kamau Thugge.

Elgeyo Marakwet residents argue that the cancellation would be a denial of their rights, as President Uhuru Kenyatta has picked the Kimwarer and Arror dams for fraud investigation while ignoring similar contractual problems in other dams.
