On November 16, 2019, the bodies of Joyce Syombua, Shanice Maua, and Prince Michael were found buried in a shallow grave in Thingithu, Nanyuki. The children had been piled on top of their mother.

Former Kenya Defence Forces Major Peter Mugure was arrested in connection to the murder of his family. Mugure was the commanding officer at Laikipia Airbase on the day of the murder, allowing him to move around undetected.

A casual worker, Collins Pamba, has come forward with allegations that Mugure offered him a job in the military if he helped dispose of the bodies. Pamba was tasked with cleaning the bloodstains in Mugure's car, which was impounded by police.

According to a police report, Mugure made undetected trips in and out of the base on October 26, 2019, evading checkups. The report also disclosed that the two children were strangled with ropes and the wife was beaten to death.
