On November 21, 2019, Erick Oloo, a correspondent with The Star, lost his life in a tragic incident at his lover's house in Siaya County. The police have since arrested Chief Inspector Sabina Kerubo, who was Oloo's lover, and three others in connection with the murder.
According to eyewitnesses, Kerubo was arrested at a chang'aa den, where she was found boozing her stress away after the murder. The police also arrested 36-year-old Victor Luta, a house help named Joyce Awuor, 38, and her daughter, whom they believe were in Kerubo's house on the night of the incident.
One of the neighbors, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that Oloo had suspected that Kerubo was dating another man. The man, a chef, was a regular visitor to the house and would often make special meals for the family.
On the night of the incident, Kerubo arrived at the house with the chef around 9 pm. They stayed for a while before leaving and later returning at midnight with a third party, suspected to be the chef's brother. Oloo was asleep in his bedroom at the time.
It was then that the two brothers pulled Oloo out of bed and started beating him up. The neighbor told reporters that two weeks ago, Oloo had confronted the man he suspected of having intimacy with Kerubo, and he was beaten up.
Ugunja OCPD Ibrahim Muchuma said that they had already arrested the chief inspector before dispatching officers to grab her at a chang'aa den. He also revealed that they had received information about Oloo's death from the chief inspector's landlord.
The landlord, Moses Ochieng, told the press that Kerubo showed up at his house on the morning of the incident, claiming that Oloo was unwell and in a critical condition. However, when he arrived at her house, he found Oloo lying in bed with a pillow supporting his bleeding head.
He was unconscious and not moving at all. Ochieng then asked Kerubo to report the matter at the police station and ask for a car, but she did not do so. Instead, she got a taxi with the help of Luta, who was still in his house.
