On November 22, 2019, a bill was presented in the National Assembly's Constitutional Implementation and Oversight Committee (CIOC) to amend the constitution and give presidential poll losers and their running mates priority in government administration.
The bill, sponsored by Jeremiah Kioni, a lawmaker from Ndaragwa, proposes that the presidential aspirant and their running mate must be the first and second on the nomination list.
According to Kioni, the main aim of the bill is to achieve inclusivity after the presidential race, which has been a do-or-die affair under the current presidential system.
“This bill seeks to cure such eventualities and ensure the country remains united after general elections. It will also ensure national unity and participation of the people,” Kioni stated.
The bill aligns with the nine-point agenda of the Building Bridges Initiative task force and will be presented to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
