Published on November 22, 2019, the Judiciary has expressed concerns over the National Assembly's proposal to slash its budget by Sh2.8 billion.
Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi warned that the reduction would severely impact the courts' operations, forcing them to halt hiring new magistrates and potentially delaying cases.
“We have 10 magistrates in the anti-corruption courts and we had planned to hire more. That will have to stop, meaning that some of the cases currently in courts will be handled in 2024,” said Ms Amadi.
The proposed cuts would also affect benefits to judges, as approved by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, and force the Judiciary to ask litigants to purchase their own stationery.
