Published on November 22, 2019, the US government imposed sanctions on Senator Amos Wako, his wife Flora Ngaira, and son Julius Wako, citing involvement in significant corruption.
According to US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, the sanctions were a strong signal that the United States is a valuable partner in Kenya's fight against corruption.
Senator Wako, a former long-time Kenyan Attorney-General, has denied any involvement in corruption, claiming that the US was unable to provide evidence to justify the 2009 travel ban.
However, former IEBC Commissioner Roselyn Akombe has reminded Wako of his past ties to corruption, referencing the Goldenberg scandal and the torture of human rights defenders during the Moi era.
Wako has challenged the US government to table evidence of his involvement in graft, stating that he has never been implicated in corruption or prosecuted for the same.
