On September 19, 2018, Monica Kimani, a 28-year-old businesswoman, was brutally murdered in her house. Her brother, George Kimani, testified in court that he had to break into the house to find her body in a bathtub.
George Kimani told the court that he had contacted Julius Irungu, aka Jowie, a suspect in the murder, to help find her killers. However, Irungu advised him to consider the help of a security company instead of involving the media.
Irungu did not mention to George Kimani that he was present at Monica's house on the night she was killed. The court also heard that a neighbour had disclosed that he was at the house with Irungu and another man, Owen, the night before Monica was found dead.
George Kimani described Monica as hardworking, open-minded, and someone who trusts easily. He also said that Monica was to fly out to Dubai to meet with her boyfriend, Yasir Mohammed, on the morning she was found dead.
On November 21, 2019, the court heard that Irungu pleaded with the court to consider freeing him on bail, but the judge said the matter will be determined when the trial resumes hearing on November 26.
