On November 21, 2019, Nakumatt Mega City in Kisumu closed its doors, leaving 37 employees without a job and sparking outrage over unpaid salary arrears.
The closure, which was announced via a notice, is the latest blow to the once-giant retailer, which now operates only five branches in the country.
Employees claimed they had not been paid their three months' salary arrears, despite management earlier this year citing the disappearance of Sh900,000 worth of Sketchers shoes as a reason to slash their salaries in half.
'There is no single day the store has been broken into, so the news of our salary being cut was absurd,' said a visibly angry employee, Julius Ochuka.
Mr Ochuka further stated that they had persevered with the meagre payments, hoping to be paid in full this month.
