Joseph Irungu, alias Jowie, Asks Court to Release Him on Bail ¶
Joseph Irungu, alias Jowie, has asked the court to release him on bail in the Monica Kimani murder case, citing that he has already spent enough time in custody and will see it as a benefit if released.
On November 21, 2019, Jowie made his first appearance in court, where he stated that he has already spent enough time in custody and will see it as a benefit if released.
He also assured the court that he has no intention of fleeing if released on bail, and will continue to attend court proceedings.
Irungu was charged alongside Jacque Maribe for the murder of Monica Kimani on September 19, 2018.
According to the prosecution, Irungu and Maribe were involved in the murder of Kimani, who was found dead in her apartment in Kilimani, Nairobi.
Irungu's lawyer argued that his client has been in custody for a long time and has cooperated fully with the investigation, and therefore deserves to be released on bail.
However, the prosecution opposed the application, citing that Irungu is a flight risk and may flee if released on bail.
On November 20, 2019, the prosecution presented evidence that suggested Irungu may have had an accomplice in the murder, citing DNA evidence that matched Irungu's DNA to the DNA found at the crime scene.
Irungu's lawyer argued that the DNA evidence was not conclusive and that Irungu was not the only one who could have handled the knife used in the murder.
Irungu's case is set to continue on November 22, 2019, with the court expected to make a ruling on his bail application.
