On September 21, 2018, George Kimani discovered the lifeless body of his sister, Monica Kimani, in her apartment at Lamuria Gardens off Dennis Pritt Road.

According to court testimony, Monica had arrived from Juba earlier that day and had communicated with her brother via WhatsApp, using her Safaricom number.

George Kimani called her later that night at around 8pm, and she reportedly told him that she was getting into a cab. She asked him to hang up so that she could deliver a package to someone whose identity she did not disclose.

However, reports indicate that the package was later given to a boda boda operator who the deceased had called earlier while inside the cab.

George Kimani told the court that this was the last communication he had with his sister that night.

The next day, he tried calling and texting her but to no avail. Their mother also called several times, but Monica's phone remained unanswered.

This prompted their mother to send George Kimani to check on her. He arrived at the apartment, where he found the house locked from the inside, with the keys still on the door.

"We went to the owner of the apartment and explained to her….she did not take long and instructions were given to the caretaker to find a way we could be assisted to access the house.…We decided to take a ladder and the gardener went up through the window," George Kimani said.

When the gardener went through the window, he started looking for the doors, but George Kimani and the others asked him to first find out whether Monica was in the house. In less than a minute, the gardener came back and looked confused.

George Kimani told the court that when he saw the caretaker's reaction, he became alarmed. They decided to use a hammer to break down the door and gain entry.

"The gardener told us she is in the bathroom. We all ran to the bathroom and found my sister there, dead," George Kimani said.
